Biography
Atanu Pal is a consultant surgeon at Cambridge University Hospitals, with a specialist interest in robotics and colorectal surgery. He studied medicine at Cambridge University. His research fellowship was in intestinal physiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. He gained further experience abroad in New Zealand, then took up his consultant position. He performs abdominal gastrointestinal surgery. This includes robotic surgery, which adds further precision to complex minimally-invasive surgery, and forms part of the increasingly digital surgical workplace. His interest in human factors and ergonomics started when he gained his pilot’s licence over 15 years ago. Flying in the UK and abroad, he uses the aviation-surgery analogy as a lens into human factors in robotic surgery. As a marathon runner, he also maintains a healthy interest in human performance and limitations!
