Dr. Anthony J. Masalonis

Dr. Anthony J. Masalonis Chief Human Factors Analyst, Spectrum Software Technology, Inc. Dr. Anthony J. Masalonis is an expert in Human Factors and Applied-Experimental Psychology, with a Ph.D. from The Catholic University of America, where his research focused on trust and usage of automated decision aids in air traffic control environments. He also holds an M.A. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from the University of Connecticut and a B.S. in Psychology from King’s College. In his role as Chief Human Factors Analyst at Spectrum Software Technology, Dr. Masalonis leads multidisciplinary teams to advance mission-critical systems for clients such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). His work encompasses the design and execution of complex studies to enhance system safety and operational efficiency, using methodologies such as human-in-the-loop (HITL) simulations, task and usability analysis, contextual inquiry, and quantitative data analysis. Dr. Masalonis is deeply involved in corporate operations, advising senior leadership on resource allocation and driving innovation through Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) principles. He also contributes to business development by identifying new opportunities within the Human Factors domain. Before joining Spectrum, Dr. Masalonis spent over a decade at The MITRE Corporation, where he researched the relationships between air traffic controllers, pilots, and automation systems. His contributions supported both the FAA and the Taiwan Civil Aeronautics Administration, focusing on the operational effectiveness of automation and human-machine systems. He has also held positions at Bell Atlantic, the Liberty Mutual Research Center, and The Catholic University of America, where his research included fatigue, shift work, and automation trust across various industries. Dr. Masalonis has authored numerous publications, including a groundbreaking series on Fuzzy Signal Detection Theory (Fuzzy SDT), for which he shared the Human Factors journal’s best paper award. His expertise spans a wide range of domains in both the academic and applied fields of Human Factors Engineering.
