Biography
Mark Chignell is a Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto,
with status only appointment in Computer Science. Mark has been a network investigator with the AGE-WELL National Centre of Excellence since 2015 and his work on technologies for aging has also been supported by the Centre for Aging and Brain Health Innovation, the Connaught
Foundation, Mitacs, the Healthy Seniors Pilot Project (New Brunswick) and by the Social Sciences
and Humanities Research Council. Mark is a specialist in Human Factors Engineering and User
interface design and is the developer of the 2RaceWithMe intervention to be used in this project.
Mark developed a serous game to screen for delirium in emergency patients (with Dr. Jacques
Lee). Mark is also the developer of the BrainTagger suite of cognitive assessment games (with
Professor J. Bruce Morton of Western University) which is currently being used by seven research
teams in Asia and North America. Mark’s goal is to make older adults more active and resilient
using innovative games that provide physical and cognitive exercise. In addition to making older
adults more active Mark’s research seeks to improve well-being and reduce the prevalence of
adverse events such as falls, and conditions such as delirium which tend to increase morbidity and accelerate cognitive decline.
