Shannon T. Mejía, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Health, Aging, and Technology in the Department of Health and Kinesiology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the Director of the Health Technology Education Program and the Adult Development, Adaptation, and Technology Laboratory. Her research situates older adults within their unique contexts to study the psychosocial factors that determine the adoption, use, and effectiveness of health technologies. Relevant to this discussion panel, Dr. Mejía’s work has demonstrated shared beliefs about aging co-constructed with older adults’ closest social partners to exert an independent influence on future health outcomes. Recent work has also shown subjective responses to age stereotypes to have implications for the emotional experience of health technology. Mejía’s work has been supported by the National Institute of Health as well as by Industry. She is a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and serves on the editorial board for Psychology and Aging.
