Designing in Hospital Settings: Soaring Into the Solution Stratosphere
DescriptionIn today’s complex healthcare landscape it can sometimes feel that we are only highlighting problems, or reactively trying to fix things to change the patient or clinician experience. What if we told you there was a way to change the way we approach challenges in healthcare to be more proactive, solution oriented and engaging for end users and patients. This requires us to augment traditional methodologies and bring a holistic approach to understand critical challenges, innovate new solutions and services, and implement change. This workshop will introduce participants to a powerful approach that integrates an empathetic, human centered and curious mindset in order to understand human behaviour and actions to create solutions that address both operational efficiency and lived experiences of patients, families, and healthcare professionals. Through interactive activities and real-world case studies, participants will gain practical, hands-on experience to inspire them to do things differently at their organization!

A central focus of this workshop will be to highlight the importance of engaging end users throughout the design process—not only clinicians and healthcare providers but also patients and individuals with lived experience. By understanding the perspectives of all stakeholders, participants will learn how to craft solutions that are more relevant, sustainable, and aligned with real-world needs.
This workshop is essential for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of how to approach healthcare challenges with a human-centered and holistic mindset. By actively engaging in dynamic exercises, participants will leave equipped with tools and frameworks to integrate empathy, curiosity, and human-centered thinking into their problem-solving processes. The material covered will span both foundational principles and practical applications, with a focus on blending qualitative insights with quantitative data to design more holistic and meaningful solutions.
This hands-on approach will foster a deeper understanding of how using an empathetic approach can lead to innovations that go beyond improving efficiency to truly address human needs. The participants will leave with tangible insights, feeling inspired to experiment with new approaches to problem-solving that combine empathy, curiosity, and rigorous analysis. This presentation offers a fresh perspective on patient safety initiatives and system improvements that prioritizes human experiences and empathy alongside safety and operational outcomes.

What Participants Will Learn:
In this interactive session, participants will break into smaller groups to actively practice new skills and explore innovative approaches to designing solutions in hospital settings.
The benefits of a more proactive approach to change, challenges and solutions in healthcare
How to bridge the gap between quantitative data and qualitative insights to better understand and address real-world healthcare challenges.
The value of engaging end users—including clinicians, patients, and those with lived experience—throughout the design process to create more impactful solutions.
Practical skills, such as qualitative interviewing, observing with empathy, journey and empathy mapping, persona development, co-creation to craft solutions that improve patient safety and outcomes.
Real-world examples and case studies demonstrating the value of an integrated approach in healthcare settings.

Who Should Attend:
This workshop is open to healthcare professionals, human factors engineers, patient safety experts, clinical designers, researchers, and anyone interested in improving healthcare systems through a user-centered lens. No prior experience in human-centered design or human factors is necessary, making the workshop accessible to a broad audience within and outside the HF/E field. Those looking to explore innovative problem-solving approaches that merge human-centered empathy with technical rigor will find this workshop particularly valuable. No prior experience of human factors or human centered design is required to participate.

Materials and Equipment:
No specialized equipment is required. Participants are encouraged to come with an open mind, ready to engage in interactive exercises that will be facilitated by a team of experienced HCD and HF professionals.
