This presentation will give insights to the development of Heylo, the first of its kind leakage notification system for stoma care, and the creation of a User Experience (UX) Score that emerged from this development process. The focus will be on how human factors engineering (HFE) informed both the design of Heylo and the UX score, enabling a more holistic and quantifiable approach to assessing and improving user-centered medical devices, that resonate with a broad set of stakeholders.
Application:
The UX score offers a systematic tool for measuring and quantifying User Experience that resonates well with stakeholders throughout the organization. This method is involving into a key tool to improve the user experience of different products produced by Coloplast. The foundation for the UX score was applied during the development of Heylo: A pioneering system that provides real-time notifications for stoma care users when leakage is detected, significantly improving the user’s quality of life. Utilizing a quantifiable metric enabled alignment and faster decision-making, it supported a shared understanding of the users’ needs, and ultimately put the project team in a position to deliver a product to market that lived up to the Coloplast mission of making life easier for people with intimate healthcare needs.
Background:
Since Coloplast created the first Stoma bag in the 1950’s, technical excellence and understanding of users’ unique needs, has delivered products that make life easier for people with intimate healthcare needs. To continue this track record, Coloplast have had to develop new processes and tools to adapt to a new situation with more diverse project teams, new focus areas (e.g. sustainability) and a need to deliver faster to market.
The UX Score is one of those initiatives. The UX score enables easier communication and stakeholder management within the organization, ultimately allowing increased focus on improving the user experience.
92% of people living with a stoma worry about leakage. Heylo was developed to address these issues by offering a proactive leakage detection solution that was informed by the needs of users. While creating Heylo, the importance of not only addressing technical functionality but also the user’s emotional and practical needs became evident.
Based on the work done during the development of Heylo, the value of developing a UX score, a systematic tool that attempts to quantify the User Experience as it related to ease of use, comfort, confidence, and overall satisfaction, was shown.
Overview of Presentation:
The presentation will be divided equally between two key areas: the development of Heylo and the creation of the UX score.
1. Development of the User Experience (UX) Score:
o Rationale for Creating the UX Score: There was a need to enable (faster) decisions-making while ensuring all perspectives were being considered. Seeing how well quantified and systematic User Experience resonated across the organization, secured alignment and enabled decision makers to effectively consider complex user research findings, it was decided to focus on further development of a UX score.
o Components of the UX Score: A breakdown of the UX score framework and parameters quantified.
o Application of the UX Score going forward: How we at Coloplast sees the potential of a standardized measure for evaluating and comparing different products within our portfolio.
2. Development of Heylo:
o Problem Identification: An exploration of the challenges faced by stoma care users, with a focus on the need for a reliable leakage notification system.
o Human Factors Approach in Heylo Design: How human factors engineering shaped Heylo’s development, ensuring it met the physical, emotional, and practical needs of users. This includes the user-centered design process, iterative prototyping, and the incorporation of user feedback.
o System Evaluation: Usability testing and clinical feedback that demonstrated the system’s impact on reducing leakage incidents, user satisfaction, and overall quality of life improvements.
Conclusion:
This presentation will illustrate how combining human factors engineering with a structured UX scoring system can lead to improved stakeholder management and thereby more effective, user-centered medical devices.
