DH11 - Heuristic Evaluation of a Medical Dashboard

DescriptionPatient quality metrics are vital for tracking and improving outcomes in healthcare. For example, it is estimated that about 1.7 million adults in the United States develop some form of sepsis, resulting in about 270,000 deaths annually (Rhee et al., 2017). Furthermore, a study of approximately 400,000 sepsis hospitalizations in the state of California found a 30-day readmission rate of 20.4%, of which nearly 30% are recurring sepsis episodes (Chang et al., 2015). Hence, diligent tracking and reporting of quality metrics such as mortality, readmissions, and other useful metrics will ensure that hospitals identify shortcomings and develop appropriate interventions to improve patient outcomes.
