MDD27 - Survey of Practice: How Can Human Factors Make Better Medical Devices

DescriptionHow does human factors work overlap with general “usability” and creating the right medical devices for users? What process do leading companies use to reap these outcomes?
We want to collaborate with attendees to canvas what tools and processes they use during medical device development to help create great products.
It is important we develop medical devices to be the best they can in terms of use safety. Improving safety for patients, and the ripple effects of that, is clearly a problem we care about as a community. Standards and regulatory body guidance perform a critical function; they set a minimum bar and mitigate against catastrophic designs reaching an end user, but we want to go beyond that.
Alongside being the best in terms of use safety, we also want to make the right product. One that is useful, usable, and likely to be used. There is a lot to be learned about product features and what fits with the user’s needs in this device development process. This information can result in a significantly more useful product for the end user when it is eventually released.
We’d like to invite attendees to collaborate during the poster session; to give their input and help create an affinity diagram on how human factors can actually result in products being the best they can be, and not just “not terrible”.
To clarify, we envisage an interactive poster where attendees would be able to discuss questions with the presenters or colleagues, and provide their input via written sticky notes, and collectively arrange the results. The questions will centre on what works well, and what good should look like? The questions will be structured based on the following stages of design (inspired by the Double Diamond design process model):
• Discovering & exploring use
• Defining & specifying what use looks like
• Developing & prototyping solutions
• Delivering & confirming the solution
Our intention is that all attendees can take away a sense of what we collectively strive for, inspiration for new ideas on developing the best, or simply solidifying their conviction in their existing approach.
