DH8 - Filling In the Gaps: Research, Development, and Refinement of a Human-Centered Decision Support Tool
DescriptionThe Electronic Health Record (EHR) continues to remain a doubled-edged sword when it comes to clinician decision support for delivering effective, efficient, and safe patient care. The use of EHRs requires clinicians to navigate a broad and deep information space of patient data to identify and integrate what is relevant to a given situation. Data may be missed, too effortful to locate (e.g. clicks, time, effort) resulting in increased potential for medical errors and even, harm. It is critical to continue the work of tailoring integrated EHR support tools to facilitate clinician work in complex, fast-paced, clinical settings.
On a team comprised of clinicians, designers, developers, and systems scientists, we developed and iteratively refined a clinical decision support tool informed by literature, clinician interviews (5 participants, including 4 male physicians (specialties of primary, ambulatory, pediatric, and emergency department care) and 1 female primary care nurse), and formal and informal evaluations conducted within and outside the immediate team. The interviews informed design recommendations associated with mitigating patient care challenges experienced by clinicians as well as strategies associated with managing information when under time and workload pressure.
The resultant tool, titled CliniPane was built as a Windows application that is intended to display alongside the Epic EHR. It is comprised of configurable displays representing patient data, along with ranges (e.g. hemoglobin, etc.). Views (collapsed versus not), screen location and width, as well as other interface features are all manually configurable by the user. The proposed poster will include visual representations of CliniPane and feature descriptions.
