The Device Dilemma: Optimizing Spaces in Hospital Labour and Delivery Rooms
DescriptionSelecting the right device for a department-wide project is a vital process with far-reaching consequences on clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, and patient safety. In this presentation, we will explore a comprehensive, multi-method, and iterative approach to device selection that was undertaken at Mount Sinai Hospital to ensure that the chosen device could effectively meet the needs of Anesthesiologists working in Labour and Delivery. The decision-making process, which included an assessment of clinical workflows, thorough anesthesiology observations, and equipment evaluations, was aimed at identifying a device that enhances user experience and point-of-care functionality. Each phase of this methodical approach will be closely examined to highlight key decision points, the rationale behind them and lessons learned.

A crucial aspect of the presentation is the balance between clinical needs, systems constraints and budgetary limitations, a challenge that hospitals frequently face. Additionally, the presentation addresses the importance of engaging with staff, particularly navigating their preferences and ensuring their active involvement throughout the evaluation and selection process. Our methodology for evaluation included room configurations, walkthroughs of the Labour and Delivery unit and prototyping of device options. Some limitations to our study include limited input from Labour and Delivery nurses and patients, although they were consulted during our observations and walkthroughs. The needs of Anesthesiologists were prioritized as the primary business owners and end-users.
The goal of the session is to equip participants with a strategic, evidence-based framework for device selection that prioritizes provider experience, improves clinical workflows, and is aligned with overall hospital goals including the provision of patient-centred care. Attendees will leave with valuable insights into a practical, actionable methodology that can be applied to similar scenarios in their own institutions. Ultimately, this presentation emphasizes how careful and deliberate device selection leads to smoother implementation, impactful clinician engagement, and improved patient safety and care outcomes.
