A Patient-Oriented Analysis of Newcomer Healthcare Journeys Using a Systems-Thinking Approach
DescriptionGovernment-assisted and asylum-seeking immigrants (newcomers) arrive in Canada with diverse healthcare needs, ranging from minor ailments and immunization requirements to multiple coexisting health conditions. Additionally, newcomers may face several barriers when accessing healthcare services, such as low health literacy, lack of familiarity with the healthcare system, communication challenges, appointment time limitations, and lack of childcare or transportation. Fredericton, New Brunswick (NB), is a primary settlement community where newcomers initially reside. However, there is currently no designated care pathway for newcomers to access healthcare services upon their arrival in Fredericton. This study aims to enhance understanding of the newcomer patient journey, focusing on their experiences and perspectives in accessing and receiving healthcare services in Fredericton. Semi-structured interviews will be conducted to collect data. The Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM), a systems-thinking approach, will be employed to model and analyze the current newcomer healthcare delivery process in Fredericton. Interviews with health and settlement worker participants will be conducted to inform the building of the FRAM model. FRAM modelling offers an improved understanding of healthcare delivery complexities by examining how multiple factors interact and influence one another, assisting in the design and integration of people, organizations, policies, and processes. A visual model of the everyday activities and interdependencies within the newcomer care process will be developed. Interviews will also be conducted with newcomers to capture their experiences navigating the current healthcare delivery process. An analysis of how newcomer patients navigate the process and how the process varies under everyday conditions is conducted. This provides valuable insights into how a complex healthcare process is executed.
