From Coast to Coast: Lessons Learned From Applying Healthcare Human Factors Approaches to Improve Perinatal and Neonatal Care in Canadian Healthcare Organizations
DescriptionPerinatal and neonatal care settings remain areas of high interest for practitioners and leaders in terms of safety and medico-legal risk. Birth trauma consistently ranks as a top risk within Canada. Human factors engineering approaches to improve patient safety in perinatal and neonatal care settings have explored interactions between humans and systems to embed safety design. There is opportunity to learn and share experiences of applying human factors engineering approaches in practice in the Canadian healthcare organization context.
This panel discussion will explore the application of human factors principles in Perinatal and Neonatal care in healthcare organizations across Canada, highlighting lessons learned from diverse regional contexts representing unique healthcare environments. For example, rural and urban contexts provide unique challenges and opportunities for patients and staff, including populations served, access to resources and staff. The panelists will share their experiences and approaches to providing safe care for patients and staff, emphasizing the role of human factors in their safety work. Included are perspectives from organizations with human factors applied in a variety of projects and contexts, as well as organizations that have collaborated externally for human factors support and expertise. In addition to speaking about the individual projects, panelists will discuss lessons learned in how they’ve grown organizational support and awareness for their applied safety work, how human factors approach has supported change management for improving sustainability, and the future of collaborations to improve healthcare safety.
The session brings together a panel of experts from various healthcare organizations that have partnered with HIROC on applied safety work. Each speaker will present their region’s specific challenges and how they have leveraged human factors principles to address those challenges. The panel aims to provide valuable insights into the practical application of human factors principles in different healthcare contexts, and how collaboration between healthcare leaders and human factors experts can create sustainable change. The discussion will offer actionable takeaways for healthcare leaders and administrators through sharing of real-world examples and lessons learned.
Takeaway Points:
• Understanding the importance of human factors in healthcare safety and performance.
• Learning from diverse regional experiences and challenges.
• Gaining practical insights and strategies for implementing human factors principles in various healthcare settings.
