Around the World: An International Perspective on Embedding Human Factors Professionals in Health Systems
DescriptionOver the last decade, human factors engineers (HFEs) and psychologists have strategically introduced themselves into embedded positions within health systems globally. Health systems in the United States, Canada, Singapore, and Israel - the home countries of our panelists, are vastly different in how they operate, how they are funded, and how they are regulated. Despite their differences, they all have one common goal of providing the best care to their patients to improve clinical outcomes. Since embedded human factors professionals have joined health systems as full-time employees, their impact and reach has only been thriving and the hunger for more HFE led initiatives is certainly increasing.
This panel brings together established human factors professionals from around the world to share their unique experiences working in or with health systems. The panel discussion will cover a broad range of topics including the current state of embedded human factors professionals within their respective countries, the panelists’ individual journeys to their current positions, future state of human factors, as well as headwinds and tailwinds that promote or impede human factors practice in patient safety and improvement efforts in their respective health systems.
Our panelists will discuss and engage the audience on additional topics including but not limited to: the influence of policies and regulations on the organization of health systems and human factors work done; education, training and experience required to be successful in an embedded position; differences in job expectations in a research versus operational role; the different market forces and resources disparities that drive work and many more.
